Enterprise Challenge Ghana

In partnership with Environment 360 we are delivering a Green economy focused version of our Enterprise Challenge Programme. Enterprise Challenge is an annual competition for young people aged 11-19 to develop and encourage their entrepreneurial spirit and business knowledge. Teams play a business simulation computer game with support from a local business mentor, which takes them through the stages of setting up and running a successful business.

The top performing teams go through to a business ideation, planning and testing phase before pitching their sustainable ideas (which included furniture built from recycling tyres, jewellery made from coconut husks) as part of a national finals in which they compete for business development grant.

Environment360 was founded in 2014 and seeks to create an inclusive waste framework that supports circularity and creates jobs for women and youth, as well as support communities in adapting sustainable waste management practices. The organisation supports business development and capacity training of informal sector workers and delivers educational programs in urban and coastal communities.

Enterprise challenge has been delivered in schools and youth centres in Accra, with teams of young people mentored by entrepreneurs from the Green Economy. The national finals, sponsored by Fidelity Bank, took place in February 2022, with the winning team receiving start-up capital to develop their jewellery from coconut husk business. The feedback from mentors, teachers and young people has been very positive, citing the Pop-Up business simulation game as a fantastic and engaging tool to support the development of entrepreneurial skills. We are now looking to run additional and scaled up iterations of this programme.
