Employability Barbados

Prince’s Trust International works with the Youth Division of the Ministry of Youth and Community Empowerment to deliver a range of employability programmes to support unemployed young people into work. ‘Get Into’ and ‘Get Hired’ programmes are tailored to meet the needs of the job market and young people. Since the inception of the partnership in 2016 programmes has been run in the hospitality, retail, logistics, construction, and uniformed services industries.

The Division of Youth Affairs in Barbados was established in 1995 as a fully staffed and specific agency responsible for fulfilling Government’s mandate and commitment to youth development.

The Get Into Programme is a unique employability scheme run in partnership between a youth/training organisation and leading employers worldwide. The programme helps to break down the barriers between unemployed young people and employers by providing young people with intensive employability skills training (teamwork, problem solving, responsibility, communication), before moving into sector specific / vocational skills training and a period of job shadowing, so young people can gain the real world experience they need to move into sustainable employment.

Get Hired is a programme designed for young people ready to enter the job market, but who need a small amount of training. Pitched as a one to three day interactive event, it matches young people with employers who have jobs available and gives the young people the an opportunity to have live interviews with a number of different potential employers.

Today the delivery of services has moved from three to six programming channels: The Barbados Youth Service, the Youth Development Programme, the Youth Entrepreneurship Scheme, the Youth Mainstreaming Programme, Endless Possibilities Programme and the National Summer Camps.

Our vision is “to facilitate the development of confident, proud, self-reliant and creative individuals through involvement in productive activity that contributes to personal, community and national development”.

Get Hired events will be taking place throughout the autumn – 2 day events where you will have the opportunity to learn about different jobs available, work on your interview skills, meet organisations hiring, and get support with applications and interviews. Register with the Ministry to be kept up to date.
