Working with PASMED to create the ‘Inspire and Celebrate’ Mentorship Programme  for young entrepreneurs

Following the visit by HRH The Prince of Wales to Oman in 2013 and discussions held during the visit about the importance of enterprise and self employment, Dr. Al Sunaidy, Minister for Commerce and Industry in Oman, set up the Public Authority for Small and Medium Enterprises Development (PASMED) – now Riyada – to nurture Omani entrepreneurial culture and be a catalyst for economic success.

Given the expertise and experience of The Trust in this field, in particular the highly successful Enterprise Programme, PASMED approached The Prince’s Trust for advice on setting up a volunteer business mentoring programme and engaged Princes Trust International as a fee-based consultant. The Prince’s Trust International project team worked on a 3 month project to create a detailed business mentorship programme, with input from key stakeholders in Oman, including entrepreneurs, existing mentors and mentees, small and large businesses, government bodies and training companies. This programme is called the PASMED “Inspire and Celebrate” Mentorship Programme.

Concluding with the programme launch in June 2014 attended by Martina Milburn CBE, the British Ambassador to Oman and Omani Government Ministers and business leaders, all the necessary tools for running the programme were handed over to PASMED and the feedback from staff and volunteers at PASMED was extremely positive.  The key tools developed for PASMED included:

  • A detailed mentoring toolkit and operations manual on how to manage the programme.
  • Marketing materials, role descriptions and application forms in order to successfully attract and retain both mentors and mentees;
  • Several tools to monitor the success of the programme from launch through to completion;
  • The training of PASMED staff on the management of the programme.
